Our Commitment
KupunaHub is committed to meeting Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. This is the standard the U.S. federal government and the State of Hawaii use for accessible public services.
We test for the things that matter most to older readers: high color contrast, large readable text, full keyboard navigation, screen-reader compatibility, and respect for your operating system's accessibility settings (for example, your preferred font size, contrast mode, or motion preferences).
If something on this site is hard for you to use, that is an issue we want to address. Tell us about it and we will respond.
Built-in Tools You Can Use Right Now
Your computer, phone, or tablet already has accessibility features built in. They work on every website, including this one. Here are the most useful ones:
Make the Text Bigger
- On a Windows computer: hold the Ctrl key and press + to make the page bigger. Press Ctrl and - to make it smaller. Ctrl + 0 resets it.
- On a Mac: hold the Command key and press + to zoom in, - to zoom out, or 0 to reset.
- On an iPhone or iPad: open Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Larger Text, then drag the slider to your preferred size.
- On an Android phone: open Settings → Accessibility → Display size and text, then adjust font size and display size.
Turn On High-Contrast or Dark Mode
- Windows: Settings → Accessibility → Contrast themes.
- Mac: System Settings → Accessibility → Display → Increase contrast.
- iPhone / iPad: Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Increase Contrast.
- Android: Settings → Accessibility → Color and motion → High contrast text.
Have the Page Read Aloud
- Windows: press Ctrl + Windows + Enter to start Narrator.
- Mac: press Command + F5 to start VoiceOver.
- iPhone / iPad: three-finger triple-tap, or ask Siri to "turn on VoiceOver."
- Android: open Settings → Accessibility → TalkBack.
Reduce Motion and Animations
KupunaHub respects your operating system's "reduce motion" preference. If you turn it on, animations and slide-in effects on this site will be turned off automatically. Look for Reduce Motion or Reduce Animations in your device's accessibility settings.
Language Access
Hawaii is home to many languages. KupunaHub asks for your primary language when you describe your situation, so a counselor can follow up with you in the language you prefer. We currently support follow-up in:
- Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin)
- Chuukese
- English
- Ilocano
- Japanese
- Korean
- Spanish
- Tagalog
- Vietnamese
If your primary language is not on this list, choose Other when you describe your situation and a counselor will work with you to arrange interpretation.
Free language assistance and interpretation services are available to you. There is no fee charged to you.
Nondiscrimination
KupunaHub and its sponsoring agencies comply with applicable federal civil rights laws and do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, disability, sex, or limited English proficiency.
If you believe you have been discriminated against in receiving services from a Hawaii Department of Health program, you may file a complaint with the Department of Health Office of Nondiscrimination.
Federal Accessibility Standards
KupunaHub is funded in part by the federal government and complies with applicable federal accessibility standards, including:
- Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prohibits disability discrimination in programs that receive federal funding.
- Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, which sets accessibility requirements for federally-funded electronic and information technology.
- Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which requires meaningful access for people with limited English proficiency.
- Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which applies to state and local government services.
Report an Accessibility Issue
If anything on this site is challenging for you to use, please tell us. We will treat your report seriously and follow up.
The fastest way is to use this resource finder on the home page: describe the problem you are having, and a counselor will get back to you. You can also email the State of Hawaii Department of Health Office of Nondiscrimination directly at doh.nondiscrimination@doh.hawaii.gov.
When you report an issue, it helps us if you can include:
- Which page or feature you were using
- What you were trying to do
- What happened that made it difficult
- What device, browser, or assistive technology (such as a screen reader) you were using, if you know.
